Wonderful tools and guidelines

Great book! It is full of very practical tips and guidelines that will make any woman a confident speaker. There was so much that I actually hadnt read elsewhere. I love the fact that she details such simple guidelines as how to stand on stage (the champion stance); how to make eye contact (the 4 box diagram); how to walk on stage (the 3 star diagram). I think it is a must read for any professional (even men).

If you are seeking an up-to-the-minute resource that will turn you into a first rate speaker, The Well-Spoken Woman is your book. Written by top speech coach Christine K. Jahnke, this book leads you into claiming your power by confidently stating your ideas and opinions while looking polished and prepared. In short, it helps you conquer public-speaking anxiety and be taken seriously. Illustrated by Kersti Frigell with real life examples from speakers such as Ann Richards, Pat Summitt, Maya Angelou, and Melinda Gates, the material is engagingly displayed and clearly laid out.

The Well-Spoken Woman's opening premise is that a woman's power persona evolves from bringing her whole self and signature style to the podium. "Expression and engagement are hot... Dialogue, listening, and showing empathy are now valued and respected." It seems the time has finally come to express our uniquely feminine leadership from the front of the room.

Research reveals that 58% of a speaker's impact comes from body language and appearance, 38% from voice quality, and 7% from the message. Now that we have the science behind it, it's easier for a woman to identify which elements of her presentation really matter and which she should spend the most time improving. This is the part of the book I learned the most from; it changed my focus from the message itself to the way my voice carries the message, and from what I wear to how I move.

After learning what makes for an impactful live performance, Jahnke moves on to something she calls the "the five C's of message development": clarity, connection, compelling, concise, and continual. The neat thing about her "message map" technology is that it applies to all different kinds of topics. She then examines which tools work best for each "C," how to practice a speech, and whether to write it out first.

If you've ever thought of videotaping yourself, you'll welcome the chapter with tips on how to become camera ready. There's even a chapter on how to deal with the media.

At the end of the book are three appendices. The first one profiles famous speakers--that's where I learned that Bill Gates is married to a Texan, that Madeleine Albright was born in Czechoslovakia, and that Suze Orman is gay. Did you know all that? The second appendix is a chronological history, beginning in 1637, of female speakers and their claims to fame. The third appendix is a handy FAQ that includes a checklist on which your presentation can be rated.

In my work, I examine a lot of new nonfiction and I must say that I was hard-pressed to find much wrong with this book or its approach to public speaking. Jahnke's specialty publisher did an excellent job of producing the paperback, including acquiring a back cover endorsement by Gloria Steinem. This book further validates the fact that our time as female standard bearers has come.

Wow

Perfect for any woman who plans on having career goals that involve getting in front of audiences. This book seems superficially focused at first, but Jahnke does a brilliant job revealing that how one's external posture, apparel, expressions, etc are actually the sounding board of how any person views themselves- and when you don't take care of those details, the results can be destructive to your career. She also gives great outlines of how to structure speeches depending on what your goals are with your audience.

She uses tons of examples throughout political history, and I'll admit I had to use Wikipedia to look up many of her references, but I'm thankful I did. The real life stories of other women making this world a better place will push you past your own comfort zone, and hopefully pursue your own goals and dreams.

Absolutely Excellent

Excellent book. I got it and immediately set myself down to read it. It will become dog-eared by the time I am ever done with it. Funny, practical, insightful and my gut says spot on, the book resonated with me in ways few have. As a 43 year old male - in the classic time frame for a "This is Your Life" moment, the book came highly recommended by a friend. Boy was I glad he set me on to it. The exercises are thought provoking and will require hashing and rehashing. The section on the change cycle was nothing short of amazing and so tied to my own experiences that I found myself looking at it over and over again - and realizing that most of my feelings are normal and the challenges achievable. A top notch resource from a top notch author.

with a great sense of humor too

Incredible book. I've learned so much from this. Martha Beck is such a unique and talented teacher, with a great sense of humor too. I highly recommend this book for people who are interested in learning more about themselves to help develop and get more clarity in life. It's also great for anyone who can tend to be hard on their self - and building more empathy for oneself. I think it's the best personal growth book I've ever read.

Hilarious, inspiring and useful

I love this self reflection, psycho therapy, listen within stuff so that's the caveat to my 5 stars. Journal in hand (which you need for Kindle version) I did every exercise and loved the journey - even the hard ones that take you to a dark place. Don't be fooled thinking you end with some a-ha moment that changes your life, but you do walk away with a framework and set of tools to listen to your body and self, really listen, and have the inspiration and feeling of support to do something about it and tell anyone who tries to scare you away from your dreams where to shove it.

And she's hilarious - I laughed out loud often.

I took my time with it, reading it side by side with some light fiction so the exercises didn't feel like a chore and that worked for me.

If you're in a shift period of your life, or wishing you were, or just looking for a better way to deal with the inevitable changes life throws your way - get a journal and read this book.

K-Gr 2—A cuddly, white cub lives with a little boy in a home in which retro furniture and telephones with cords suggest the mid-20th-century. When the animal's size quickly outpaces the boy's (and the scale of the house), the child sets out to find a new habitat for his friend. The titular question becomes the narrative engine for a series of spreads taking the duo to places ranging from a toy store and zoo to the circus and jungle. Nothing suits the bear, until they arrive at the Arctic. The controlled palette for each spare composition relates to the changing colors of the (mostly solid) backgrounds. The boy's navy shorts and blue-and-white striped shirt are constants as are the white curves of the animal. Their friendship survives the distance, and the bear proposes a new trip together, setting up the boy to ask the question one last time. This pleasant but not distinguished foray into picture books by a British art director is strong on design but a bit short on sustaining narrative interest. With the exception of the circus scene, the bear is a static figure—either sitting or standing—in each new situation. Sophy Henn (www.sophyhenn.com) lives and works in Sussex, England. She studied Fashion at Central Saint Martins, accidentally had a London based career as an Art Director in advertising, then completed an MA at University of Brighton in Illustration. the best book ever this week

And the final book, the best book ever this week, is called Where Bear? And it's by Sophy Henn. And this just might be a perfect picture book. Where Bear? stars of boy and his bear, and the boy just continues to ask that reprised, "Where bear?" Where should you go? Where do you want to go as you're growing and growing larger? Where should your home be? And the boy searches all over to find "Is it a zoo? How about if we bring you to a toy shop? What about the jungle?" And no place is right. And so the boy keeps asking, "Well then where, bear?" And finally we find the just right place. But the other thing that works so well is not just the terse language in this book, but also the way that each background in this book is just a solid pastel color, a pastel and gray color. And we just see that boy and the bear, who are basically gray and white, black and white, right up front and right up close. They are the star of our book, and that's where our eyes will go for the entire book. It's a marvel to read. I think you're going to read and just sigh and be thankful that such wonderful books exist in this world. And that's why I'm calling Where Bear? by Sophy Henn the best book ever this week. Way to go!

What do you do with a bear you have outgrown?

What do you do with a bear when he’s too big for your house? You find him a new house……..but where? In the forest? In the circus? In a toy shop? Or in the zoo? These are questions a boy is pondering as he realizes that his little bear has grown up just like him and he feels that the bear needs room to be “bearish and big.” The duo sets off to find the perfect spot but bear is not satisfied with where the boy takes him. The boy finally comes up with an idea and it works. I think children will enjoy the book as it was a sweet relationship and the illustrations were simple.

This book has quickly become my 3 year old son's favorite. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is adorable. We like to come up with reasons why we think Bear doesn't want to live in certain places. I love books that allow children to come up with a little story of their own. He always wants to read this book at least three times in a row. Beautiful work :)

I would require all students interested in construction as a professional read this. before they start any classes : say read blue prints now.when I was an entry level construction inspector I had the good fortune to run into a super superintendent who ordered me to read the prints this is an absolute for any person

It is a nice book for someone like me who doesn't have much first hand experience but want to learn more.it gives very detailed explanation of construction management terms.

Well Written

I'm using this book as the text resource for an introductory level course in Construction Management at a four-year accredited program in the Southeast. The students are responding favorably to the conversational style of the writing and the level of content in terms of depth. The book works equally well for both my more experienced students and the ones who are just getting their feet wet in the career field. If you're looking for a great overview book on the construction industry this is a definite buy; if however you are looking for great depth on any one particular area of construction management you should probably look elsewhere.
