This Book Has A Lot Of Useful Information About 3D Printing

I am an engineer and use 3D printing at work and at home, and learned a lot about 3D printing and designing and optimizing parts for the 3D printing process from this book. I will use what I learned to improve my designs and to get better prints.

These areas are especially useful to me:
- Part orientation on the print bed to optimize strength.
- Ways to divide your model into several pieces to improve strength, surface finish and make it print more reliably.
- A formula and good explanation of the relationship between nozzle diameter and wall thickness to ensure thin walls will be filled properly and not unintentionally hollow.
- Excellent illustrations on snap fit designs and design factors to consider to make them work properly.
- Design guidelines for fastening and joint design with suggested tolerances to use as a starting point.

I will definitely reread this book and use it as a reference when designing and printing parts, and when troubleshooting failed prints.

this book has some great ideas for working with 3D printed designs

Short and to the point, this book has some great ideas for working with 3D printed designs. It clearly states the issues and provides nice real world solutions to the types of problems you can run into. I'm still a 3D printing newbie and this was a great help to me. The Kindle version suffers from poor rendering of the images, so I would go for the PDF version of the book.

Angels on all-fours and other night creatures...

*Nightwood* is a novel composed in poetic prose, as T.S. Eliot asserts in his preface, the kind of writing that "demands something of the reader that the ordinary novel-reader is not prepared to give." Most novels are not composed at such white-hot intensity, at a level of personal emergency such as Djuna Barnes has conveyed in *Nightwood.* This is a book that doesn't let you rest for a moment, the rare sort of novel that is all conflict and climax. It's a work that you don't doubt was torn living from the author's very being, less a "novel" per se, than an organic and all-but-impossible to dissect whole that loses more the more you attempt to analyze it.

What Barnes records in *Nightwood* is the experiential agony, as opposed to merely the "story," of a love-lost. Robin Vote is a Sapphic femme fatal, an androgynous, alcoholic, nymphomaniac enigma who is beloved, successively, by three different characters, who she subsequently leaves an emotional wreck. Nora Flood, who stands in for the author, is the narrative center of *Nightwood* and the woman around whom the others orbit, with Robin, like a doomsday asteroid, orbiting them all. It is Nora who struggles and suffers and indeed understands Robin better than anyone, even if that only means understanding better the tragedy inherent in knowing her at all. Her utter despair at losing Robin is stunningly captured by Barnes who, it is said, based *Nightwood* closely on a real-life love catastrophe from which she never recovered. One can believe it reading *Nightwood.* A good deal of the novel's intensity comes from its unquestionable authenticity. In Robin Vote, Barnes has created the personification of the unsolvable mystery of every beloved who, as if by destiny, eludes, indeed must elude, our grasp.

Much is made--and rightly so--of *Nightwood's* most famous character, Dr. Matthew O'Connor, an impoverished, drunken, charlatan with dubious medical credentials and a penchant for cross-dressing. A good deal of the novel is devoted to O'Connor's rambling monologues which vibrate between madness, comedy, and transcendent wisdom...sometimes all three together. But the transgendered O'Connor is only the most flamboyantly unconventional of *Nightwood's* inhabitants. All of Barnes's characters are misfits and outsiders, sexually and/or socially; interestingly it is the very displacement they feel within their own time and place that most enables the contemporary reader to sympathize with them. The sense of being out-of-step is, perhaps, timeless. But it's more than mere sexual and social deviance that connect the contemporary reader to these characters--it's a sense of the secret life of us all, the inherent "deviance" of our private lives from the "normal" daylight existence of moderated emotions, rational desires, and objective viewpoints we all pretend to share. "Nightwood" is the country we inhabit when the sun goes down, "society" dissolves, and the inexplicable, uncontrollable, and irrational in us emerges.

I found the first chapter of *Nightwood* dull and dated and almost considered putting the book down. Don't do it. Hang in there until the second chapter...if Barnes doesn't catch your attention at that point, chances are she won't. This is a challenging text, elusively and elliptically written, ejaculatory, jumping from peak to peak, a shout from the soul of despair, a cry from the dark night. The characters don't so much interact with each other, but, as in real life, they are merely declaiming to themselves, using the declamations of others as cues to their own speeches. They affect, deflect, and "aggravate" each other in a sort of vacuum, forcing them to even greater degrees of solitude and despair. And yet, through all these characters, we hear one voice, one lament...the author's, ours, every lover's. As uniquely particular and personal *Nightwood* may be, as idiosyncratically composed, and as inimitable, it is nonetheless an emotional document as common and identifiably human as any kidney or pancreas.

A rare thing, a "novel" that is also a work of art -*Nightwood* is a gnomic utterance of the apocalypse of love.

On each spread one or more animal characters faces an ethical dilemma (should Ima Scalebody the fish cheat on her test? Should Howie Hogg clean up the toys he took out?). Readers are encouraged to assess the situation and choose a suitable (and usually obvious) answer from three selections. As one of the many visual bonuses in this volume, the letter of the correct response is hidden somewhere in Mark Buehner's illustration. The artist's passion for visual surprise doesn't end there: he has also concealed bumblebees, cats, rabbits and dinosaurs, among other things, in each of his lush and expressive oil-and-acrylic paintings. From a school of fish in an underwater classroom to rats in a cafeteria, the artist tweaks familiar settings by populating them with his own gently anthropomorphic animal kingdom. Kindergarten-Grade 3AFollowing the format of their popular picture book about manners, It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel (Dial, 1995), the Buehners now take on behavioral issues. On each double-page spread, readers are given three choices, two of them obviously wrong and quite amusing, and must pick the proper behavior for the animal in question. Situations include promising to do something until a more attractive offer comes along; considering a lie to avoid punishment; wanting to cheat on a test; and being tempted to destroy or litter property. The language is filled with tongue-tripping alliteration and wit: "Run over Rudy's red rubber radio repeatedly." The large, bright illustrations, executed in oils and acrylics, sustain the text's humor. A group of fish are, literally, in school; a bat reads Wait Until Dark; Santa and his reindeer fly across the Arctic sky; and a fish has a packet of Gummy Worms. Children can search the illustrations for the letters of the correct answers and check their responses in the answer key. Many animals are also hidden in each picture. The Buehners (It's a Spoon, Not a Shovel! 1995, etc.) continue their mission to make learning decorum a giggle instead of a slap on the wrist. In page-long fables, animals such as Ollie the Octopus and Rateesh Rat get into situations that demand decisions, while multiple-choice quizzes allow readers to participate. When Ollie's mother calls him for dinner, should he obey her, or stay and play? When Rateesh is feeling lonely, will hoarding or sharing his cheese endear him to rodent playmates? The letter of the correct answer is hidden somewhere in the lush illustration accompanying every tale, and some of these are difficult to find; regardless, the answers are provided at the end of the book. The illustrations must be pored over; observant readers will discover an intrepid bee in every take and plenty of hidden silliness: sheep-shaped clouds, a gummy-worm fish snack, Santa departing from the North Pole. Most children will have no problem discerning correct behavior, and some adults may wince in recognition at the black-and-white approach to ethics: It's not right to lie about a child's age at restaurants where those under five eat free. Not for 4-year olds even though it says so!

I was really disappointed in this book when I received it. Based on what I'd read, it seemed like the right book to teach my 4-year-old son about saying you're sorry, admitting when you did something wrong, etc. The details section even says this book is good for kids 4-8. However, the lessons taught in this book deal with a far more sophisticaeted, responsible world than that of a 4-year-old. For example, one page deals with a bat who is supposed to stay home and take care of his baby sister while his mother goes out. His friends ask the bat to come outside and play and the bat has to decide whether to keep his promise to his mom and be responsible or go play. A totally inappropriate story for a 4-year old who should never responsible for another child. In addition, in a story about respect for others' property, one of the possible answers is "'Cool' means you never have to say you're hairy." This answer is NOT something my 4-year-old would ever understand and is just one example of answers which are confusing (and meaningless) to 4-year olds. I intend to return this book.

Great book!

I bought this for my 6 year old. It is a series of short paragraphs with a multiple choice section at the end of each one. The stories are cute and funny, and she really got into thinking about the "right thing to do". Each short story has a different moral-example-saying sorry, telling the truth, being responsible, not following the crowd etc..She also enjoyed looking for the hidden answer in the picture for each short story. A great book-with good examples on doing the right thing.

This super-obscure book, which I am told is out of print, was a "Suggested" textbook for my Statistical Quality Control course (senior-level Engineering). Since it was ridiculously inexpensive I purchased it.

We had an exam in the semester, which was open-note & book. Most of the class didn't have the book and probably didn't think it was important to the exam. There was a problem on the exam that I was confused on and didn't know how to do, but the problem began with "This sampling scheme (developed by H.F. Dodge) blah blah blah ..." and it hit me: look up HF Dodge in the appendix. Sure enough, his sampling scheme was in the book, and the examples in the book provided the exact answer to the problem on the test :D It probably made the difference between an A and an A-.

Fantastic book

I learned so much from this book. It was uncanny how many times I found myself reading about exact situations and outcomes I have experienced as a people pleaser. I didn't realize that I was creating the negative outcomes I was experiencing through my own expectations and inability to say no. I wanted to make everyone happy and the opposite happened instead. I really recommend this book if you think you are a people pleaser or constantly find yourself going "above and beyond" for others but feel that they never come through for you.

As if the author had read my mind

As I look back over the years my last two relationships ended the same way, I stayed behind blaming myself with what
"ifs" and asking myself what had I missed to provide them with? The sad reality was that I had spend years pleasing them both with everything they wanted, I had to be nice to them because I wanted them to stay. This book is a must to read for people like myself who have spent their lifetime pleasing others because ........... just because....it is time to realize that we can not buy love, persuade others to stay because of our acts of kindness.

Really the best book ever- gave me lots of insight about myself and has a very helpful 21 day plan :) highly recommended for those that avoid conflicts because your scared of repercussions or making someone angry. Really helps you understand how being a people pleaser actually hurts you and your relationships with people

Monotonous at times, but definitely works

The exercises in this book can be really monotonous and require a lot of time and dedication. That being said, they absolutely WORK. This book has greatly increased my coordination around claves, but more importantly it has increased my ability to perceive and re-orchestrate claves.
So I guess my only warnings would be:
1. Do not buy this book if you are not serious about learning to play Latin music. This is not a book of 'grooves' or a quick study in world music. You will have to put A LOT of time and effort into this book to see results.
2. This book focuses on the rumba clave, so if you are looking to learn the son clave, you may want to find a different book.

I found this book to be a very interesting and refreshing change to the other books I seen relating to this subject. This is not for the faint at heart. "Conversations in Clave" will challenge and motivate...but YOU need to do the work. No magic pill here!! If you go for it, you will increase your independence,knowledge and skills.

Top notch book on thin films

My Ph.D. research was in thin films and this is the only book that I keep at my desk. I give it to the new employees that I mentor as an into to all major deposition techniques. It does need to be updated though. It does not include many of the newer techniques such a pulsed DC sputtering, cathodic arc deposition, ect. If your getting into thin films, this is an excellent into book.

Awesome expansion to the Gears universe.

The kilo squad survivor's log is a neat collection of journal entries written by Damon Baird of Kilo squad during the events that take place during the game Gears of War Judgment. The Survivors log also contains drawings, post cards, aptitude tests of the members of kilo squad, and even the Cole Train's rookie card! These little extras seem to have been shipped right out of the gears universe. The book is meant to look and feel like Baird's Field notebook and the blood and coffee stains on some of the pages really makes it seem believable. Most of the entries are Baird writing to his parents postmortem but as sad as that may seem the entries are full of Baird's odd since of humor and are really fun to read. Baird covers everything from his first few weeks enlisted, basic training, the first time he met Cole, Sofia, and Paduk, the battle of Halvo Bay and of coarse the trial of Kilo squad. I always thought that of all the characters in Gears of War, Baird was the one we knew the least about. The Kilo squad Survivor's Log is a really neat look at Baird's story and adds a lot to Gears of War judgment..

Still reading the book but so far its great. This is definatly set up to feel like a survivors log. As there are clips that are "taped" into the book like you would expect from a diary/journal. GOW is awesome!!
