Kendalls are phoning it in.

Old fashioned: That's what I'd call it.
How can apps and mobile device issues receive such little attention in your book? This achingly new (and unbelievably expensive) edition disappointed me. It doesn't address recent developments in Systems Analysis and Design. The Case Studies are hilariously out of date and the context is so American-centric, I felt embarrassed sitting in the middle of a group of Indian and Chinese colleagues. Clearly the Kendalls haven't developed anything for a while. When I mentioned some of these issues in class, my professor said, "Well, they are old, you know?" yeah. I'm old too, but good grief!!!
I don't intend to be mean, but I'm so disappointed I must plead with professors to find a textbook with more contemporary perspectives. it's not that we can't learn anything from this book... of course we can! But the book barely skims or completely misses many of the things that will actually get us jobs.

For a rental the book was clear and free of any markings and/or highlights. Everything was fine with the one exception that he smells really bad every page I turned the smell of a smoker or even like it sat in a room with mold. Probably should take it out of the rotation.

Avoid the paperback they'll send an (Eastern Economy Edition) which is a fancy word for( ugly useless B&W printed on the worst paper quality possible) you can read almost three pages without flipping any.

Big disappointment indeed!!!!

Good for kids

I grew up watching this series, and fell in love with Batman because of it. The moment I saw a preview of the pages for Nightwing and Harley Quinn (my favorite characters) I rushed to order this. However, I was a bit disappointed. I'm used to the "Ultimate Guide to ---" Books and was expecting this book to be just as detailed. It is very thin, and not very specific. This book is great for people and kids who know very little about the series and want to get acquainted. For true fans, its not even necessary. Only major characters are covered. I would have been more impressed if a character like Rupert Thorne's accomplice Candace would have gotten a page. I don't see why not, she appeared in multiple episodes. However, in this book, Rupert himself only get a paragraph on the "Other Villians" page. An episode guide would have also been nice. The most you get here is a list of where each major character first appeared. I hope a more detailed book will appear in the future.

I love Batman the Animated Series. When I heard of this book, I immeadietly bought it. You'll data on every character from the series and what episodes they first appeared in. Some of the pictures are photo shots from the series. Great for Batman fans.

There was not that much interesting material in this book, but I used it as reference for drawing my own Batman pictures, and it was alright for that. I ended up gifting this to a younger sibling as their first bit of Batman memorabilia ;)

The Lamsa Bible is Worth Reading

While the Greek and Roman churches flourished, a herdsmen people living in Muslim Kurdishia had their Aramaic manuscripts, unadulterated by well-meaning Christians to the West. Discovered around WW I by the British, a lad with a photographic memory was "adopted" by missionaries, taught English and well educated. Dr. Lamsa's translation builds faith in God's protection of His Word as this Bible is remarkably similar to other English Bibles. This N.T. is all you need study as the O.T. was preserved by the Jews and not molested by well meaning Christians.

I don't like the way the 'other author?' - Stadler - is missing from this edition.
I very much like the way the information is presented to the reader and the content.

Lots of Information, Boring to Read

This is the book for my "Introduction to Electronic Mass Media" class. It is VERY boring to read. The professor seldom refers to it, maybe 3 or 4 times in class. However, there are some very good sections, that even though they aren't interesting, they are useful. An example is the 2 sections on semiotics. There is an entire chapter that can be used as a outline for a semiotic analysis, as well as an appendix in the back of the book about a semiotic analysis, with pictures.
One thing that really stands out when you think of books that are used as college textbooks, this one doesn't have vocab words. Though a lot of students hate vocab because it is one more thing for the prof to put on the test, I think that it would be useful in this book because there are a lot of terms (i.e. semiotics, gender codes, etc.) that can be summed up in a sentence or two, so that the student will have a better understand and will be about to follow. It would also be nice to have the terms bold-faced for studying.
There is a lot of information in this book, but it is one of those books that you either have to be really into media or you have to force yourself to read.

RA YESHÉ SENGÉ was Ra Lotsawa's grand-nephew. He lived in Tibet's western province of Tsang around the late twelfth or early thirteenth century and is traditionally renowned as the first patriarch of what came to be known as the "Western tradition" of Ra Lotsawa's spiritual lineage.

"I have intelligence, honor and goodness"

This is an amazingly profound and informative text. Ra Lotsawa was a true non-sectarian master who mastered many of the schools and teachings, converting heretics along the way and vanquishing nefarious forces. He ransomed the life of countless animals and even established dogs, sheep and insects in meditation, and performed many other amazing miracles. He is one of the great Lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist history. This is a riveting and enlightening story of a truly wonderful Dharma teacher.

"I have a meaningful effect on whoever makes a connection with me.
I have intelligence, honor and goodness".

The above quote sums up Ra Lotsawa, and the value of this book. It is priceless.

A study guide for people who pratice HYT or have the Yamantaka initiation.

The All-Pervading Melodious Drumbeat: The Life of Ra Lotsawa is an autobiography by his successor of the lineage and nephew. This book has the feeling of a Sutra. This story is similar by way of message like The Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra. With this biography written before Je Tsongkhapa, the over all message is with in the current Gelupa school of today.
The Great Lama Ra Lotsawa partnered with five consorts and had children. This behavior was in debate in his life time. He would have fit in with Nigma tradition of modern times (example: Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche). After the reforms of Je Tsongkhapa (1357–1419), the Gelupa School has a policy of celibacy. The songs of Great Lama Ra Lotsawa give advice for non monastic followers of Buddhism. I reserve hard conclusions due to the absents of the consorts life stories. The wisdom of these consorts need to be published if available.
The magical transfer of conscious to a pure land in self defense. My judgment is he is not an evil man where as he is a cold blooded killer. He was judged by his society and deemed an enlighten being. Marpa has a similar history in the Kagyu school.
One point, I am uncomfortable with is his position of Vajrabhairava is superior to all dharma practices. The Buddha taught 84000 different baskets of teachings to enlighten the 84000 different minds that arise in suffering. Great Lama Ra Lotsawa killed other Lamas who was imposing (causing a skirmish with in the Dharma community) a point of view of Vajrabhairava as a false Dharma. My point of view is not a single dharma practice is better than any other but the end result is for the individual enlightenment. The guide of a qualified Guru to lead the student is very important on which practices to work and study. Je Tsongkhapa's finger print on the currently set of Vajrabhairava practice focuses on transforming anger into the path of enlightenment with Guhyasamaja as the base. I feel the Great Lama Ra Lotsawa made these statements to increase the students faith in the path to enlightenment using Vajrabhairava as the focal point.

Propaganda? But don't throw out the baby

I also read some of the Thangtong Gyalpo's biography. If you compare the amount of gold change hand between the two books. I have to conclude the benefactors of Ra Yeshe Senge on average gave him some order of magnitude more gold than Thangtong Gyalpo's benefactors... that made me think the book might be partially served as propaganda. Were there that much more gold in the hand of people between the two era? This is my samsaric mind... but it was a good read overall.

GREAT JAVA GUI BOOK FOR DEVELOPERS.

We are evaluating the architectural approach to take for a major software project at the Pacific Northwest Aerospace company that I work for and this book goes a long way toward answering questions that we have on our approach should Java be chosen for the implementation.
Perfect for engineers, without a lot of time, who want to learn GUI programming from the ground up once they have picked up Java. Also very useful for engineers that work closely with software developers to define GUI frameworks that clearly delineate the division of labor, via MVC idiom, between those two groups of people.
The building block approach of this book is one of its principal strengths. No programs are presented until the third chapter, after User Interface (UI) concepts and JFC overview, thus giving us an opportunity to absorb good design principles and how stuff fits together before grinding out any code.
Reminds us continually to program for the user, A Good Thing. After discussing laying out the structure of a program, there is good coverage of Swing and AWT. Examples are focused around the current concept or component presented with minimal extra fluff.

Wonderful book

I am new to both Java and Java GUI programming. This book is for people who know the basics of Java and now want to write real-world code. It does an outstanding job of teaching that from the ground up. And, unlike some of those Microsoft authors who annoy you with their cute remarks, Vartan's style is staightforward and professional. He starts out by explaining the concepts behind AWT and Swing. This was still confusing to me after the first 2 chapters, but it became clear after I read later chapters. He thens dives into concrete discussions of the GUI components. His style of combining class tables, code samples, code discussion and screen shots is extremely effective and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book!

Excellent plan, flawed execution

First and foremost, this is a well-meaning volume covering both AWT and Swing development in a fair amount of depth. In its favor, the book covers the Model-View-Controller concept in detail and provides plenty of concrete examples of how to implement GUIs in both AWT and Swing. The description of layout managers, especially the Gridbag layout which I once found impenetrable, is one of the clearest and most direct I have ever seen.
Neither positive or negative: this is NOT a first Java book. It assumes a passing familiarity with the language and OOP in general.
Negatives: the book could have used another editor (or three). Some of the code examples are partially repeated either immediately before or after the main listing, giving a sense of deja vu (or vuja de). Also, the lack of attention to detail shows through in some of the copy as well, with statements like "Event handling is one of the primary uses of event handling in Java programming" (p. 397) squeaking by the final edit.
Honestly, people: I will edit these books for free if you give me a free copy. It's just that simple. I'm sure other programmers would do the same.
With a bit more attention to detail (and a little bit more coverage of the "Model" end of things), this book could have been great instead of very good.
