About the Author
Gaston Rebuffat was born in Marseille, France in 1921 and died of cancer in Paris in 1985. He was one of the greatest French climbers in the mid-20th century. He began to climb aged 14 on his home crags, the soaring limestone cliffs at the Calenques along the Mediterranean shore and Mont Sainte-Victoire. Every summer he migrated north to climb in the Alps above Chamonix. Rebuffat became the first climber to ascend the six great north faces of the Alps. He was also a key member on the 1950 French expedition that climbed Annapurna, the first 8,000-metre peak ever climbed. Over his 50-year climbing career, he made over a thousand first ascents, including many in the Mont Blanc massif. Besides being a prolific climber, Gaston Rebuffat became a foremost mountaineering writer, despite having a very minimal formal education He wrote 20 books, wrote a regular climbing column for Le Monde newspaper, started his own publishing house in Geneva, and wrote and narrated several award-winning films.

Nice Overview But Not A Guide

For those who know NOTHING about Mont Blanc, it is a nice start. This book was a nice introduction to Mont Blanc, but it was not sufficiently detailed to do any serious planning for a climb to the summit. There are plenty of routes, but no detailed maps, like perhaps a 1:50,000, or 1:100,000 scale. Also, there was no detailed explaination of the hut system and how to actually make reservations, etc. In addition, there were no phone numbers or addresses for more detailed information. Furthermore, there was no discussion of where to park cars, or get off of trains to start via the cable cars. Also, there were no climatology graphs for temperature or precipitation on Mont Blanc. There were not even recommendations for more detailed guide books. In my opinion, Mount Whitney, California has exponentially better information with a computer message board, maps, and very detailed guide books.

This book is about inspiration, about learning the mountains. Besides the descriptions, you'll only need a map, a compass... and your experience, which can be basic for the first trips, but should be high for the last ones, especially in case problems (bad weather, injuries...) happen.
This book is not pampering you, it shows you the ways -- YOU'll have to do them. If you don't know what it takes, it's probably not for you.
I've browsed this book so many times it is now getting well worned -- after so many years in the mountains, it can be!

Truly enjoyable for anyone who appreciates The Alps

A beautifully presented, large format, book with thorough history and art portrayed for Mt. Blanc. Covering the history of many of the great first climbers of not only Mt. Blanc but also several of the world's great summits, truly aids in putting mountaineering into perspective. Reading of this book before climbing Mt. Blanc, visiting Chomanix, or touring The Alps at all, will greatly aid in your appreciaion of some of the most breath-taking peaks in the world.

Incremental Actions Bring Monumental Results

For years I've used daily habits to increase my wellness and happiness. With Jenny's book I can add a few more to repertoire. They are simple yet solid habits that you can add easily to your daily life.

If each of her 70 habits increased your health by just ONE percent, just think what the cumulative effect would be! A favorite motto of mine is "Incremental Actions Bring Monumental Results". Those incremental actions can certainly be learning to relax, improving your social relationships, and finding hobbies that spark your passions.

Written in an easy to read style with about one page devoted to each habit, "70 Powerful Habits" can be read all at once, or one page a day. The "further reading" links for each habit allow me to delve more deeply into those that really work for me.

This book is chock-full of useful and intelligent information

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to incorporate healthier habits into their life. If you want to be healthy (mentally and physically) more energized and lose some weight then this is the perfect book for you. Some of the habits are life changing and I've already started implementing them.

The book provides a lot of useful background information to substantiate these habits. The part I really appreciate the most is that every habit includes a list of actionable items so they can be easily implemented straight away. As Jenny (the author) says, you shouldn't rush the process and I agree with that. If you'll slowly start to implement these habits one by one, your life will change for the better.

"Before this book there was only one real Veterinary Histology text, and that was Bacha and Bacha, a great book with lots of pictures, but zero textual content, nothing to explain the ‘Why?’ of Histology. Samuelson’s book is a totally different story. There are hundreds of histology pictures, macroscopic images, E.M. pictures, giving you the big picture right down to the tiny little details. And if that wasn’t good enough, the text explains histology!!! I find histology so difficult to understand, but Samuelson’s book explains all of those odd terms you hear in lectures but can’t remember. My only gripe is that there isn’t a Picture Index, to let you reference a particular picture, and the part of the book covering the liver is smaller than I would like, but when you consider that other Histo texts are just pages of pictures with no useful information this is a huge leap forward. I still have my copy of Bacha and Bacha Histology, but it’s going to be getting very dusty on the shelf with my other redundant books."

It is richly illustrated by high quality colour photographs which are of great help to the students for interpretation of the histological slides. The text is clearly written and well linked to the illustrations giving the reader a strong introduction to the different structures analysed. The content is appropriate to our study program... there is no doubt that it constitutes a very good book and it will be recommended to the students as a reference textbook. Good to students

Textbook of Veterinary Histology is up to date and it contains excellent figures. However, some points on important subjects of the histology in some systems are not observed. This is the main weak point, but in general is very good to students and practical veterinaries.

The author is able to combine the most innovative and radical thinking on several fronts--racial theory, feminist, and legal--to produce a work that is at once history and political treatise.  By using the history of how American law--beginning with slavery--has treated the issue of the state's right  to interfere with the black woman's body, the author explosively and effectively makes the case for the legal redress to the racist implications of current policy with regards to 1) access to and coercive dispensing of birth control to poor black women 2) the criminalization of parenting by poor black women who have used drugs 3) the stigmatization and devaluation of poor black mothers under the new welfare provisions, and 4) the differential access to and disproportionate spending of social resources on the new reproductive technologies used by wealthy white couples to insure genetically related offspring.

The legal redress of the racism inherent in current  American law and policy in these matters, the author argues in her last chapter, demands and should lead us to adopt a new standard and definition of the liberal theory of "liberty" and "equality" based on the need for, and the positive role of government in fostering, social as well as individual justice.

Roberts, a law professor at Rutgers University, asserts that African American women have been engaged from the start in an ongoing fight to gain control of their reproductive choice. First, in the early days of American slavery, from control by white "masters" who forced slaves to produce children to work for them, and now, from government "solutions" to African American child-bearing like the distribution of the long-term contraceptive Norplant in African American communities.

Roberts also takes the mainstream feminist movement to task for working mostly for the "negative right" of liberty, that is, the right of women to not have the government involved in their reproductive decision-making. To Roberts this debate, focused mainly on government non-interference, ignores issues especially important to African American women such as access to contraception or reproduction technologies. "Reproductive freedom is a matter of social justice," she says, stating further that it is social inequality, more than any legal interference, that severely limits African American women's ability to choose how and whether to have children. "We need a way of rethinking the meaning of liberty so that it protects all citizens equally," Roberts writes. Roberts's exploration of the history of African-American women and reproductive rights is brilliant, controversial, and profoundly valuable. The author, a professor of law (Rutgers Univ.), brings forth a view of black women wholly ignored by mainstream America. Beginning with slavery and moving to the present day, she argues that white America has perpetuated a legacy of pathological social violence against black women and their reproductive capabilities. Female slaves, Roberts asserts, were often bought with the express purpose of using them as breeders; white males profited by raping black women and selling their children. Later, in the first half of the 20th century, the eugenics movement turned contraception from a tool of women's liberation into a tool of control to cut birth rates among southern blacks, and as late as the 1970s black women were routinely sterilized by hysterectomies that were not medically necessary. More recently, poor black women living in urban areas have been forced by courts, doctors, and health care organizations to be implanted with the Norplant birth-control device; doctors frequently refuse to remove it on request. Roberts's arguments are especially convincing because they are so well researched and thoroughly dissected. Drawn from documented cases, African-American theorists, and media reports, Roberts's knowledge of her subject is total. Instead of painting black women as passive victims of this reproductive racism, she represents them through the image offered by a former slave, Anna Julia Cooper, who characterizes the black woman fighting to protect the bodies of her daughters as ``an entrapped tigress.'' Fascinating history of black women's reproductive history

This book is a must. The history of black women's reproductive health is a subject that is rarely taught in schools. This book is very well researched and very accessible. It's a must read for anyone involved in reproductive justice activism, social justice activism and anyone living in America. Roberts traces how past events shape our present lives, particularly the lives of black women. Learn about the racist and classist origins of policies like eugenics, welfare and birth control. The topics are heavy but you will be better for it.

Needed account of reproductive history

Roberts, a Rutgers law professor, examines the sociopolitical reproductive history of black women--concluding this group did and still faces disparate treatment in public policy. The combined impact of race/ethnicity, sex and ecconomic status govern black women's relation to their own bodies--and treatment from policymakers and medical personnel.
While this premise has been previously examined by other scholars, Robert's contribution differs in legal analysis of the state/women relationship specifically as it applies to black women. She also faults fellow feminists for their ignorance, silence, and apathy towards black women's unique reproductive rights.
Begining with a critique of the predominantley white pro-choice movement for preoccupation with white middle class women and the assumption reproductive access means the same thing for all groups, Roberts holds black women's fertility is only valued if a predominantley white society can find ways to benefit from it.
She also notes that illegal abortion took the highest tolls on low-income black women who were unlikely to have the financial and political clout of rich white women to convince doctors to perform theraputic abortions in secret. At the same time, abortion should not be the sole issue of a truly progressive reproductive rights movement because coercive sterilization and contraceptive programs are also painful incidents in black women's reproductive history.
The pro-choice movement should oppose reccent 'welfare reform victories' because of the destruction such punitative measures have on black communities. Although most recipients were and continue to be white, policy debates were flooded with inferred images of the black "welfare queen" to foster and exacerbate racial and class tensions within the most conservative industrialized nation in the world.
Because anything else repeats the very conditions she is seeking to eliminate, a truly progressive reproductive policy supports the rights of all women to control their own bodies. Not enough to perform "multicultural" outreach, all feminist reproductive rights groups must fully intergrate a multi-pronged, class concious approach into their mission statement and policy objectives.
This book is an indispensible text for a social science course on reproductive rights, law, and/or social policy, but should be read by all who are concerned about securing freedom for all.

Excellent book on reproductive health from a woman-of-color perspective!

Although it is bittersweet (I wish there was no need for a book on this sour subject), I absolutely love this book! Dr. Roberts' thorough analysis of reproductive health as it relates to Black women is outstanding. As a medical and public health professional, I often refer to this book as a resource for various projects and research. I recommend this book to anyone who is entering the field of reproductive health, medicine, or health care. I also met Dr. Roberts and she is truly a gem - sweet, down-to-earth, and very knowledgeable.

An interesting little book about drilling a RR tunnel.

This book describes the challenges faced by the people trying to drill a tunnel through a mountain in the Berkshires during the 1800's. This project was one of the first to use TNT, back when it was very unstable. Hundreds of men lost their lives over the course of several years and several attempts to build the Hoosac Tunnel.

Memories indeed

Grew up just west of Cleveland and a trip downtown was an Occasion. Regrettably, I never ordered from the kids menu, but I remember with delight the SpecialSandwich, plated with a leaf of iceberg lettuce curling over it like a breaking wave. Very happy.
