    What differentiates the best places to work from all the rest

    Worth Reading, with Caution

    Written by a pair of business consultants, the principal message of "Re-Engage" is both simple and entirely consistent with the human relations school of managerial thought: treat adults like adults, and they will work like responsible, motivated employees. The authors' views were informed by a great deal of quantitative and qualitative data. Collected by Quantum Workplace on an annual basis since 2004, the research portion of this project consisted of some 2.1 million surveys with more than one million qualitative responses. Employee engagement seems to be defined as a heightened sense of commitment felt by an employee for a particular company, job, or manager and that produces desirable outcomes such as greater levels of effort or longer employment tenures.

    Statistical analyses pinpointed several actions taken by leading companies in order to inspire higher levels of engagement. These include nurturing trust, aligning employee efforts with organizational objectives, encouraging professional and personal growth, and recognizing/rewarding positive performance, among others. Throughout the book, the authors refer to what they dubbed three "crosswind factors." These are variables, including generational diversity, diseconomies of scale, and difficult economic conditions, that greatly influence the enactment of various engagement principles. In other words, context matters!

    There is plenty to like about this book. For one, it is teeming with rich, qualitative data. This allows the reader to see, in telling fashion, what the "good companies" do well and what the "bad companies" do poorly. The authors' grasp of reality is another noteworthy strength of Re-Engage. So often, human relations literature becomes somewhat aloof, almost acting as if "being nice," by itself, will drive employees to higher levels of productivity. One can sense that the authors of this book have a firmer understanding of what is and is not realistic.

    Of course, Re-Engage also contains notable shortfalls. Consider the following:

    ~ Are these truly America's best places to work? Were all U.S.-based, Fortune 500 companies included in this research? Certainly it is not possible to involve every major American company, but neither should the authors/publisher use the title "America's best places to work" if several Fortune 500 companies did not participate. Also, the survey itself leaves something to be desired. A copy is not included in the book, but the reader can access it online at [...]
    . One might reasonably question subjective survey items such as "My employer is family friendly" and "We have enough staff to get the work done right." Questions of validity and reliability are not answered. The book references several appendices that are supposed to be available at the book's website. If they exist, I could not locate them.

    ~ Re-Engage is no masterpiece in literary terms. While books such as Good to Great offer considerable insight through extensive commentary, this particular book relies most heavily on employee responses that are simply transcribed into book form. There is little weighty discussion. Indeed, some portions of Re-Engage look and feel more like a workbook than, say, something written by Drucker, Senge, or Collins. Do not be fooled by the page count. The book can be read rather quickly--comparatively speaking.

    ~ Probably due to confidentiality, the authors mention company names very sparingly. Indeed, most companies specifically mentioned by the authors are not Fortune 500 caliber. One fault that might be laid at the feet of the authors is an overreliance on certain companies. For instance, they use an interview with the management of Gaylord Palms Hotel and Resort in a few different chapters.

    ~ Thorough analysis is withheld at times. For instance, the authors, in the opinion of this reader, fail to sufficiently consider questions such as those that follow: Could these attempts to enhance employee engagement generate a higher sense of employee entitlement? Could it be that the best places to work are simply better hirers? Is it possible that the "best places to work" are better only in comparative terms, i.e., if the neighboring ship is skippered by the devil himself, then my ship, though it be commanded by Captain Bligh, appears to be the "best place to work." Furthermore, there is little acknowledgement of the fact that many employees surveyed probably had an "ax to grind."

    If nothing else, Re-Engage is not boring. Indeed, the reader's mind should be stimulated by this book, and her preconceived notions should be challenged. Where it lacks scientific rigor, thorough analysis, and rich commentary, it compensates with penetrating questions, often implied, that test the reader's assumptions about employees and their engagement with the company. Re-Engage deserves a good rating, yet it falls well short of a business masterpiece.

    A wake-up call for leaders and managers

    This book does an excellent job of reinforcing every aspect of the exam

    This book does an excellent job of reinforcing every aspect of the exam. I bought this especially for the CRAM guide. I understand all the information when studying but truthfully it's the details that start to fade. The CRAM guide is like one huge flash card and for me it works to churn up the details just before the test. It is perfect... 6 pages of condensed information giving you the big picture (with all the details) of what you need to pass the test. The software covers everything on the CRAM guide giving you an interactive way to study. After using the A+ Exam Cram this was on top of my list for the N10-006. Protect your investment (test fees) get this book.

    Great Study Material

    Great breakdown of all of the certifications subjects, I couldn't have asked for a better piece of literature on the N10-006. Furthermore, they key distilled facts are highlighted throughout the book and some are included on 2 cheat sheets that I would carry everywhere with me. The reason I bought this book is because after a long while of studying there was still things I was iffy on, and it really gave me a better glance at what was on the exam. I'm not saying this alone Is a one and only to pass right away, because the Network+ takes some studying and thorough knowledge.

    What I did Is take the complete list of exam objectives and go over it a few weeks before the test after all my studying using Videos, reading this book and certain websites, and writing... a lot of writing. I made a flash card out of every bullet pointed objective I needed a thorough go over with. For example I made a card with a table that listed information such as speed, medium, switching method etc of WAN technologies. Just a method that works for me! Each chapter also has a series of questions before and after to gauge your understanding of each section. I love practice questions, these help worlds with making sure you know whats what.

    The book also comes with quiz software and a 10% voucher. The quiz software can me tuned to be made into a certification like scenario which I highly enjoyed because It gave me the final push of confidence to schedule my exam and take it. It allows you to select a number of questions from a bank and have X amount of time to complete it, then it is graded similarly to the style of CompTIA's exams 100-900 Points. So I would set It up to be exact. 85 questions, 90 minutes to do it, unfortunately there are no scenarios so get some degree of familiarity with the hands on stuff.

    I passed my exam and this was the last medium I used to study, I highly recommended it to anyone taking the Network+ as it provides a good comb through of every exam topic without getting overly in depth.

    My entire regimine to pass was as follows:
    -Network+ study videos. Id listen in the car, at work, in the shower, you name it.
    -Hardcore note taking and internet searching of all objectives
    -Thoroughly reading this book and taking even more notes from it
    -Studying the "Cram Sheets" provided, and oh yea, more notes. Study all these notes.
    -Practice exams and quizzes, til you hate them. Write every one down you get wrong and what makes it right. The one in this book is great!
    -I had sticky notes of port numbers and other information at my desk at work, and fridge at home Lol
    -Self made small networking lab
    -Oh and more notes.

    Francis X. McConville holds a BS degree in Chemistry and MS degrees in both Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He has worked in the chemical industry and related fields for more than 26 years, including 14 years as a process engineer at Sepracor, Inc. He has helped scale up chemical and biochemical processes in Asia, Europe and North America. He now operates a consulting business and lives with his family in Worcester, Massachusetts.     Teaching everything for successful pilot plant operation

    "Pilot plant real book" to be exact; "Pilot Plant Bible" not an exaggeration.

    I felt lucky to get a copy of this book BEFORE setting my foot into pilot plant. I found it extremely useful in transitioning into pilot plant operations from R&D laboratory environment. For these two, many things are same in principles but different in real operations. The book teaches everything: reactors, fittings, material compatibility, pumping, heat exchange, distillation, recrystallization, etc. In doing so it truely helps practitioners to sacel up reactions successfully and safely. I used it as a textbook initially to learn pilot plant operations and it is for sure a wonderful reference book as well.

    This book is a must have for any working chemical engineer, chemist or chemical technician in the pharmaceutical industry. The author has compiled a tremendous amount of information that is easily accessible and applicable to practical chemical development. I reach for it now when I need a reference for chemical property data, equipment information and other working knowledge. I work in a scale-up lab and find this text invaluable.

    Let's answer the burning question straightaway: Steve Thomas believes that Patsy Ramsey is responsible for the death of her daughter, JonBenét, Christmas night 1996. As a key member of the team assigned to investigate the murder of the 6-year-old girl, the former detective knows the facts of the case as well as anyone, and the conclusion he draws is convincing and clearly presented. And, as it turns out, his theory about who may be guilty of the crime is just one of the shocking revelations in JonBenét: Inside the Ramsey Murder Investigation.

    From the outset, it was a textbook example of how not to run an investigation: JonBenét's body was moved from where it was discovered before clues could be gathered, evidence was mishandled or removed altogether, the coroner failed to conduct routine procedures to determine time of death, and the crime scene was not sufficiently sealed off for hours after Patsy Ramsey's 911 call first summoned the police. In all, the initial response was inept, and it served to undermine the entire investigation; the utter lack of cooperation with the police on the part of John and Patsy Ramsey then compounded the difficulties. Within hours of the murder, the Ramseys had their own team of high-priced lawyers, who effectively insulated them from any direct contact with detectives. Nearly four months passed before police were able to question the parents at length, and only then on the condition that the Ramseys be given full access to police reports and evidence prior to the meeting. In essence, they behaved like suspects, and when Thomas and other detectives tried to determine the Ramseys' guilt or innocence, they were stymied every step of the way by Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter and those under his direction.

    The hostile relationship between the police and the D.A.'s office slowed the investigation to a crawl, and, in Thomas's eyes, proved the principal reason an arrest was never made. Despite copious evidence against them and glaring inconsistencies in their testimonies, particularly Patsy's, the Ramseys were not even officially listed as prime suspects until March 1998 because the D.A. would not permit it. All the while, Thomas alleges, Hunter was leaking sensitive information to tabloid journalists and allowing the Ramseys' lawyers to dictate the direction and scope of the investigation. Thomas eventually resigned from the police department after exposing the D.A.'s mismanagement of the case, and a grand jury was called. But the grand jury investigation was ultimately undermined by the D.A.'s refusal to hear the testimony of several detectives closest to the case.

    About the Author
    Steve Thomas received more than a hundred commendations and awards during his thirteen-year police career, including the Award of Excellence and the Medal for Lifesaving, for assignments ranging from recruit training and SWAT to special investigations and undercover narcotics. Prior to the JonBenet case, Thomas worked on a multi-state task force investigating racketeering and organized crime that resulted in numerous grand-jury indictments. Thomas has been a guest lecturer on criminal justice topics and instructed extensively on law-enforcement issues.

    An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case

    An excellent account of the total screw-ups in this case. What a shame!!! I believe that crimes committed by celebrities/the wealthy (e.g. OJ Simpson, etc.) seem to get botched by the authorities that are enamored by the celebrity involved. No justice was served here nor in OJ's case. Sad, sad, sad. . .

    Lost my interest with his opinion

    I understand the author had a viewpoint, and used this book to allow his readers to hear it. Yet, there was underneath the message, a determination to have his opinion be the only opinion that matteted in this case. That was dusturbing to me. It felt very personal. He lost his way in my opinion, and my interest by this distraction. He might be wrong, he might be tight.

    Fascinating read

    This book is an exhaustive behind-the-scenes look at the Ramsey case ... Very interesting to read the detective's point of view and feel his frustration. So many times while reading it I said out loud, to no one in particular, "no way!!" But the twists and turns, roadblocks and sabotage kept right on happening. Once you start reading this book you won't be able to stop. It is compelling. I plan to read it again just to pick up on the unbelievable details that I might have missed.
