About the Author
James A. Heintz currently guides today's students as Professor and Director of Accounting and Information Systems in the School of Business at the University of Kansas, where he has taught for 11 years. Prior to joining University of Kansas, he was the Accounting Department Head at the University of Connecticut for eight years. He also served as Assistant, Associate and Full Professor for 20 years at Indiana University. Professor Heintz earned his doctorate from Washington University in St Louis and is a CPA. He was a Price Waterhouse Faculty Fellow at Indiana, an Arthur Andersen Faculty Fellow at Connecticut, and is currently the Deloitte & Touche Faculty Fellow at Kansas. Professor Heintz has won numerous school and university teaching awards, including three teaching awards from the Doctoral Student Association. He has served in various capacities on 24 doctoral dissertation committees. Heintz has published numerous articles in accounting and business journals, including THE ACCOUNTING REVIEW; AUDITING: A JOURNAL OF PRACTICE AND THEORY; ACCOUNTING AND BUSINESS RESEARCH; JOURNAL OF BUSINESS FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING; and INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH. He served on the editorial board of AUDITING: A JOURNAL OF PRACTICE AND THEORY for seven years. Professor Heintz has served on various committees of the AAA and the FSA, and as president of the Accounting Programs Leadership Group of the AAA. He has participated in external reviews of accounting programs at 12 major universities.

Dr. Robert Parry is Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business in Bloomington, Indiana. An accomplished teacher, Professor Parry has taught accounting at virtually all levels. While earning his MBA, he taught accounting at Bishop Klonowski High School in Pennsylvania. While earning his Ph.D., he taught introductory financial and managerial accounting at Northampton County Community College and Lehigh University. At Indiana, he taught in the undergraduate, MBA, Masters Ph. D. programs. In addition, he has taught accounting in the Consortium of Universities for International Studies in Asolo, Italy. During his 35 years at Indiana University, he won or was nominated for 27 teaching excellence awards, including recognition twice by Business Week as one of the country's Outstanding MBA Faculty. In addition, he was awarded the Indiana University Distinguished Service Award for planning and deploying an integrated MBA Core Program. He also received the Kelley School of Business Innovative Teaching Award for designing and implementing the Master of Science in Accounting Program curriculum. Dr. Parry has conducted research in public finance, governmental accounting, and accounting education. His work has been published in many journals, including Public Finance Quarterly, Public Budgeting and Financial Management, Financial Analysts Journal, Accounting Horizons, Management Accounting, Research in Accounting Regulation, Research in Governmental and Non-Profit Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, and Journal of Accounting Education. Dr. Parry was lead author on the Service Efforts and Accomplishments research report published by the Governmental Accounting Standards Board. He also served on many committees of the American Accounting Association, including President of the Government and Nonprofit Accounting Section.

I bought this so I didn't have to pay the college bookstore's outrageous price, and for the price I paid it is a great book. It came as described. It has some wear on the outside of the book (on the corners and the spine), but that is normal for used books. It also has highlighting in it, but that is fine with me because I was going to highlight in it anyway. So I gave this 5 stars because it was as described and arrived on time.

In its six-hundred-square-mile basin they grew cotton, while in Los Angeles office towers they built one of the country's largest agricultural operations, swallowing small farms and multimillion-dollar subsidies with equal vigor. In the early part of the twentieth century, his family moved from Georgia to California, where they drained one of the country's biggest lakes, Tulare Lake, and planted cotton. Soon their cotton empire became the richest and most technologically sophisticated on the planet. This book is many stories, all rolled into one epic. It's the story of the Boswells from the 1800s to the present day; of cotton farming in America; of California itself; and of the evolution of race relations as the country dragged itself out of the era of slavery and, not at all smoothly, into the modern era. Written in a lively style that matches the bigger-than-life qualities of its subject, the book is far more exciting than you might think the story of a cotton farmer would be. Great Read about a Mysterious Company

I've written about JG Boswell (BWEL) a couple of times here on MicroCapClub, but I finally finished reading the only book that gives a detailed history of the company and man behind it. JG Boswell is known as the country's largest farm (150,000 acres), which is located in California. The intrigue with the company isn't in the size of the farm, but how it got so large in the first place.

The farm itself is on an old lake bottom, what used to be Tulare Lake. 100 years ago this lake was the largest lake (600 sq miles) west of the Mississippi River, and it was drained dry by farming. The farm to this day continues to tap 15% of the river system/aquifer as irrigation. The true value of the farm even today isn't really the abundance of crops that are produced but in these water rights that are thought to be worth $10's of billions.

The company was started in 1921 by J.G. Boswell, and later run by J.G. Boswell II who is credited for the company's growth from 1952-1984 (died 2009). JG Boswell II was a very intelligent and influential businessman who even served on the board at General Electric (GE) when Jack Welch was CEO. Welch said of Boswell, "A very independent outside the mold thinker, just a maverick sort of a guy".

The book gives a fascinating account of the history of JG Boswell, and how environmentalists and the US government tried to step in and stop the company several times. The fact that the company still exists today is just a testament of sheer will power and leadership by JG Boswell II. The company is a very private company even though it is publicly traded. As in most cases, the more private a company or person is, the more intrigued outsiders are to learn more. The book was a great read and provides one of the only detailed accounts of this mysterious company.

Another Fine Chapter in California's History

This particular chapter details the rise of a farming empire in California's Central Valley. Coming from Greene County Georgia, the Boswell family built this empire largely on the backs of migrant labor and water--lots and lots of water. One other point: on the way to becoming one of the largest landowners in California, the Boswell's forever reshaped the landscape and drained Tulare Lake.

Prior to settlement, the Central Valley's river floodplain system nourished some 1.4 million acres of tule marshes and wooded wetlands. The draining of vast sweeps of wetlands along with the damming and channeling of four major rivers has altered the landscape in both a manner and at a scale that is, quite literally, unprecedented. If you wanted to focus on a single family/farming empire that played the biggest role in this alternation, then you could do no better than The King of California.

Tulare Lake lies near the southern end of California's Central Valley. The proximity of such a huge, seasonal lake to a large farming operation was a mixed blessing. During dry years, as the shoreline contracted, the land could be transformed to grow grain or row crops. In wet years, however, as the Sierra Nevada snow pack melted, the runoff of the Kings, Kaweah, Tule, and Kern Rivers filled this basin. The big runoff produced high flows into July and August, resulting in a vast and expanding lake shore. The flooded farmland resulted in less crops, less money... J.G. Boswell was determined to rein these waters in and convinced the Federal Government to help.

In an errant attempt to encourage small family farms, loopholes in the reclamation laws brought most of the land in the Central Valley under the control of a handful of private landowners. The Californian land barons went by the names of Henry Miller, J. G. Boswell, and "Cockeye" Salyer. The land around Tulare Lake eventually got folded into Boswell farming empire. In the final analysis, the Boswell's got the land, the water rights, and handed the tax-payers the bill for the construction of Pine Flat Dam on the Kings River.

I feel a bit of guilt when I throw on a mass produced cotton T-shirt (e.g., I can buy a three-pack for under ten dollars). Because this cheap cotton underwear really isn't that cheap. Mass produced cotton uses a lot of water. In fact, to grow a single T-shirt takes 257 gallons of water. If you own a piece of cotton underwear, chances are pretty good it's fibers came from land in California's Central Valley. And by default, you can be sure the Boswell family grew it. The King of California tells the interesting story of how the Boswells became the single largest grower of cotton in the United States.

Well written and entertaining.

All in all I feel the book brought out the good and bad man taming and controlling the Tulare Lake basin. The mixed basket of intended and unintended consequences strong willed individuals and politicians. In the end, poor public policy mixed with a driven group of individuals concentrated wealth and power in the hands of a few.

A great history of California water and water policy.

no..just no!

Man, this is painful for me to write because I love Colleen and have just got around to reading this (I have a long TBR list..) and I just loathed this book. I didn't like this story one bit.

First, Tate is a completely simple minded, boy crazy moron for accepting their "relationship" in the way Miles (the jerk) laid it out. I can't stand weak heroines! Miles himself was an ass. Granted, he had a crappy past but that doesn't allow him to treat people like doormats.

Lastly, there was no romance between them. They went from strangers to sexual partners and there was zero connection other than sexual attraction between them. You didn't know Tate much, didn't catch why they were falling for each other. It really is all baffling.

I love CH and I refuse to give up on her but this..this was just painful.

Confused and disappointed

Halfway through this book, I had to come here to read the negative reviews because SOMEONE.. (Someone please) had to agree with me about this book. I couldn't be the only one thinking I had picked up some raunchy highschool supermarket book with those ridiculous covers of Fabio on them. All my girlfriends at work were raving about it, begging me to read it. So I gave in. I started realizing quickly that the characters in the book are all in their twenties, fresh out of college, which would explain why my co-workers would relate, even more so that we are all RN's, most of them back in school just like Tate. I pushed that aside (tried to), I said, ok you're a decade older, but you can relate, you were in your twenties once... You dated Pilots, you're an RN like her... Relate! So I continued. But is the author fresh out of college too? Fresh out of highschool? Im not going to lie, I moved through it pretty fast, but it's like someone else wrote on here.. Its like that train wreck you can't stop looking at. Im dissappointed in the 5 star reviews, but then again, maybe this is for the young adult reader section. And if it is, is saddens me that my 13 year old daughter is to face such literally mediocracy as she enters young adulthood.

SNOOZE FEST!! Read “Sarah’s Child” by Linda Howard instead!

I absolutely adore Colleen’s Books, but this is her worst in my opinion. I have read EVERYTHING she has published and this was a major disappointment. I think the high ratings are because of the love of her previous books. Heck, I’m giving it 2 stars because I like her other books but really it’s a 1 star at best. I am a prolific romance reader and have been for decades and knew from reading her books that she has a great talent for writing romance. That being said, I think this was a dull book and the only reason I finished it was because I adored her other books. I will continue to buy her books because we can’t hit a home run or get on base every time we go up to bat. But I hope her next one will make up for this dud.

The characters were flat and the secondary character we blah at best. If this had been her first book out, we would never have heard of her. I’m just saying. Linda Howard wrote a Silhouette Special Edition in 1985 (that has a similar story line) that is way more developed than this. I don’t even think this had enough depth to be shortened to a novella. I think CHoover got caught up in trying to give us an emotional incident book (death, sickness, disability, abuse, etc.) instead of just writing a good book that has a major incident in it. Catherine Anderson does great at incident books and has for a while. I also think Mia Sheridan is good at incident books. The sex scenes were horrendously boring! I’ve read series romance books with better-written sex/love scenes in them (i.e Harlequin Blaze, Harlequin presents/Lynne Graham).

I would not recommend this book to anyone that hasn’t read any of her other books.

Mostly good arrangements of all songs from '25'

In general, this book is about what you would expect: it contains piano transcriptions of every song from 25, along with the vocal line and guitar chords. Like much of Adele's music, most songs on this album are quite piano-heavy, so I had high hopes for the transcriptions being authentic. Mostly, this is true. For example, "All I Ask" is absolutely beautiful and sounds almost spot-on to the album recording. It is my favorite piece from both the album and this book, and you won't be disappointed with it. "When We Were Young" is decent, but when the album recording has both the piano and bass, the transcription in this book has only the piano part--you're missing the little bass runs that I think make the song a bit more exciting (and, no matter how stunningly performed the song may be, the instrumentals are very simple and you can probably do just as good as this transcription just by looking at the chord progression and faking it if you don't care about the bass; I was able to find a transcription I liked better as a digital download on a well-known online sheet music store). Finally, her first hit from the album, "Hello," is quite poorly transcribed if you're just looking for the accompaniment: on this piece, they decided to put the melody into the piano part. It's mostly easy ignore if you're a capable enough player to filter it out, but to play it like that requires more effort and ruins what could have otherwise been a great transcription of a beautiful song. Finally, there are a couple songs that just don't work as well on the piano (ones without a prominent piano part in the album itself), but I wasn't as interested in those anyway.

I'm deducting one star for the aforementioned reasons: some otherwise good transcriptions are mysteriously missing something that would make them more authentic, and some "accompaniment" lines are transcribed with the melody (but at least the whole book doesn't consistently do that). In general, the book is well done, and it does include all songs from the album with reasonably good transcriptions of most of them.

Note to the publishers: Please let us look inside the book before we buy! It's so hard to judge if the music is at your level before even looking at it. I'm disappointed that many of these songs are a bit above my intermediate skill level. I would have easily known that by looking through the pages for 2 minutes.

The easiest songs to play are "Sweetest Devotion" in the key of C, and "Send my Love" in the key of D. If you are like me, and aren't going to spend a lot of time practicing the more difficult songs, I would buy those separately.

The arrangements were done in a way that an intermediate player such as myself could enjoy the music, though I believe an advanced player would enjoy the songs as well. Though I can't say I'm a rabid fan to the point of buying concert tickets in the first 10 minutes before they're sold out, I do appreciate the beauty of her music, and this another way that I'm able to enjoy it.

Must have for Porsche people

This is the seminal book on air-cooled Porsche details, mods, maintenance, etc. If you are a DIY person and a Porsche enthusiast, then you must have this in your library. I am more of a purist, so I do not participate in any of the mods in the book, but even those sections give you a glimpse of the workings of your Porsche. If you have an interest in DIY maintenance at a pretty high level, then this is one of the books you should have.

David Dvorin (Chico, CA) is an Emmy-nominated composer, arranger, performer, and music producer. He has composed music for film, video game, and television projects, and has worked with the Kronos Quartet and renowned composer Terry Riley. He is currently composing for concert works. In addition to his musical activities, David helped develop the education market for eMagic, Inc. (the original developer of Logic) and Apple Computer. A frequent presenter at music technology conferences, David is currently a professor of music composition and electronic music at California State University, Chico.

This is the book you want

This book comes with very nicely prepared Logic files to follow along with almost every chapter. Dvorin covers just about everything that Logic can do at a reasonable pace, and he adds expert advice throughout for speeding up workflow and getting the most out of the DAW.

Note that not much has changed in this book from the previous version, "Logic Pro 9 Advanced Music Production."

It has been a terrible experience!

I bought this book new from Amazon and the access code for the digital content doesn't work! When I enter it, it tells me the code is already in use! If you've used this kind of book before, you know that the digital lesson content is integral part of the learning process. i contacted the publisher and they first tried to tell me that Amazon was who was responsible. They honestly seemed clueless and didn't know what to do except point the finger away from themselves. It has been a terrible experience!
