BRICS: An Anti-Capitalist CritiqueFrom Pluto Press

One of the major success stories for capitalism in recent decades has been the rise of the BRICS—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, developing nations that have seen strong growth and have become major international economic players. But their rise brings with it a number of important questions for economics, politics, and democracy, questions taken up by a roster of stellar contributors in BRICS: An Anti-Capitalist Critique.

Offering critical analyses of the rise of the BRICS economies within the framework of a predatory, exclusionary, and unequal global capitalism, the contributors tackle questions such as: Will the BRICS force social change and innovation on the established economic and political order? Do they herald a new opening for democracy and human rights, or are they likely to be forces of political repression? What should we expect in the coming years, especially as some of these economies face significant hurdles in the wake of the global financial crisis? A contrarian, anti-capitalist exploration of some of the most important national economies in the world today, BRICS offers a much-needed counterpoint to mainstream analysis.

Review
'A uniquely valuable resource written by a stellar group of authors. They pierce through every aspect of the discourse around the BRICS, showing the reality beneath the politically engineered triumphalism.' -- Alfredo Saad-Filho, Professor of Political Economy, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London "This book is the most significant work yet published to examine these issues through a critical lens. It features essays from leading leftist scholars across the world such as Patrick Bond, Immanuel Wallerstein, Leo Panitch, William Robinson, Elmar Altvater, and Vijay Prashad, among many others ... The authors document the currently existing positions on the BRICS: from those who celebrate it, are cautious of it, to those who criticize it. It provides a useful and comprehensive overview of the current state of debate on the topic and provides a clear way to introduce the volume.' -- James Parisot, Marx & Philosophy Review of Books

Tension between capitalist growth and justice-based citizenship
By Romi Mahajan
An excellent set of essays on the "emerging economies" called BRICS, an expansion of the earlier BRIC formation with the "S" being South Africa. These essays discuss the tensions between the aspirations of the powerful in these large economies and their common citizens, positing that "growth" is not an unalloyed good. Trenchant critiques of capitalism undergird these essays as does a critique of neo-liberalism in all it's offshoots.

That the world is multipolar has become a truism but the degree to which a certain economic model has become dominant (neo-liberalism capitalism) isn't often explored- BRICS provides a readable assessment of this with these large and developing economies as test cases.

The essays are uniformly interesting and suggestive- not only of what's gone wrong but also of what is possible.
